I assume you’re here because you’re struggling in some way, and that whatever you’ve been doing in your life to deal with your pain simply isn’t working any longer. So you’ve hit a kind of impasse, and you’re unable to work around the pain, manage it, ignore it.  And you sense you can’t do it alone.

My clients usually find me through some kind of loss, a divorce or relationship upset, an illness or other transitional challenge. These experiences are often accompanied by difficult feelings — of anxiety, sadness, depression — and by behavior that just makes the situation worse. Taken together, the result is often a crisis of meaning and a radical disruption of the status quo of their lives.

Initially drawn to me to deal with the symptoms of such crises — the difficult feelings and behavior — my clients discover lifetime patterns conditioned from childhood that have created less-than-optimally lived lives.  This exploration radically alters their outlook, deepens their experience of self and loved ones, and ultimately creates lives rich with meaning, inspiration and soulfulness.

Individual Psychotherapy & Couple Counseling

I offer individual psychotherapy and couple counseling sessions.  My office is in the city of Sausalito, California, just north of San Francisco and a few miles from the Golden Gate Bridge.  Call me for my address and directions.

I specialize in:

  • relationship issues
  • challenges of mid-life transitions
  • addictions, compulsions and codependence
  • expatriate, repatriation challenges
  • resolution of the emotional trauma from childhood

Basically psychodynamically oriented, my approach integrates elements of systems and transpersonal psychology and the recovery model. I specialize in the resolution of emotional trauma — both episodic and the more chronic developmental kind from childhood — and utilize EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing), in which I am certified, as well as some elements of somatic psychology.

I have experience with Asian family systems, having lived and worked in Singapore with Chinese, Indian, and Malay cultures, as well as the international business, military, diplomatic and journalism communities there. I am deeply familiar with the stresses of expatriate life and the phenomenon of repatriation.

A parable of personal growth:

AUTOBIOGRAPHY IN FIVE SHORT CHAPTERS

by Portia Nelson

I

I walk down the street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk
I fall in.
I am lost … I am helpless.
It isn’t my fault.
It takes me forever to find a way out.

II

I walk down the same street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I pretend I don’t see it.
I fall in again.
I can’t believe I am in the same place
but, it isn’t my fault.
It still takes a long time to get out.

III

I walk down the same street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I see it is there.
I still fall in … it’s a habit.
my eyes are open
I know where I am.
It is my fault.
I get out immediately.

IV

I walk down the same street.
There is a deep hole in the sidewalk.
I walk around it.

V

I walk down another street.
